ABBAYE KASHISHA

ABBAYE KASHISHA ("Abbaye the Elder"; c. 300), Babylonian amora. He is called "the elder" in order to differentiate him from the better known abbaye of a later generation. He taught and interpreted halakhic beraitot (Yev. 24a; Ket. 94a, 96b), but also dealt with aggadic topics (Shab. 56a). He compared dissension and controversy to "the planks of a bridge which at first are loose but ultimately become fixed in place through constant treading" (Sanh. 7a).
